"Established in Belfast 1891"

  ABOUT US

WR Simpson was started by two brothers, William and Robert, in Edinburgh and then branched out to locations in Dublin and Belfast. This proved to be the most successful venue for business and personal reasons (including a desire to live in Belfast!) and the business was located in Donegall Street. Eventually WRS moved to Smithfield where it remained until 1974 when, of necessity, it moved to 96/98 Great Patrick Street.

WR Simpson was started by two brothers William and Robert in Edinburgh, branched out to locations in Dublin and Belfast. This proved to be the most successful venue for business and personal reasons (including a desire to live in Belfast!) the business was located in Donegall Street. Eventually WRS moved to Smithfield where it remained until 1974 when, of necessity, it moved to 96/98 Great Patrick Street.

After the brothers death, Arthur Simpson, son of Robert, took over the management of the business until his death. He had been joined by his son Douglas aged 19, who trained at Salter’s in Birmingham, he then became Managing Director and was joined by his wife Rosemary as Director in 1969. Following Douglas’ death in 2007 Rosemary became Managing Director. Retaining the family link their son Ian and daughter Karen are co-directors.

Opening its doors for the first time in 1891 in Belfast the family firm WR Simpson has supplied weighing equipment for 116 years. In the beginning we employed blacksmiths and engineers to manufacture our own platform scales. By the 1970’s it was clear that electronics would eventually replace the mechanical scale. We continued to supply mechanical equipment but re-trained our engineers in this new technology. Coming up to the present day nearly all our scales are electronic but we still keep a few mechanical scales for special applications. Our engineers still have to go through the rigorous five year apprenticeship which now includes electronic and mechanical scales.

Hospitals, medical centres, banks, retail outlets, and farmers are amongst our valued customers, but equally important is the person who wants a small individual order.
Moving to new premises in the near future will bring new challenges to the firm, which has always been ready to meet changes in business which have included decimalization, metrication, and in Ireland, the change to the Euro currency.

We look forward to meeting the demands of the next decade with the co-operation of our main suppliers Seca, Salter Brecknell, Turier and Fereday and whenever necessary other specialized companies.

Being an independent company has allowed us to treat our customers as people and we offer the very best sales service around. Quality of product and service has always been uppermost in our business and this ethos will remain undiminished.
