From January 1st 2003 all new weighing scales purchased for medical use must comply with European Directive 90/384/EEC and Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC.

The regulations are enforced by Trading Standards (Weights and Measures) who are empowered to visit establishments and inspect weighing scales in use. If found not to have been approved and purchased since 1st January 2003 they will be taken out of use. If approved but found to be outside the permitted error tolerance then the scales will be put out of use until they are re-calibrated or repaired. The scales will then be required to be verified by an authorized service company or a Trading Standards Officer.

Service requirements are as follows:

• Test weights in use must be U.K.A.S. certificated annually.
• All scales must be recorded on a certificate showing location, make/model, condition and if the scale passed or failed calibration.
• Engineers must be fully trained and known to the manufacturer.
• The Service agent must be able to repair and have the scales re-verified.
